Blackjack Strategy

Blackjack is arguably one of the easiest online casino games to pick up. However, that does not mean it is simple to master and below you will find some of the leading Blackjack strategies available today. Before we begin, let’s take a quick look at some of the rules and variations of the game.

In simple terms, the object of Blackjack is to beat the dealer’s hand. There are two ways you can do this, one of which is by having a total that exceeds the dealer’s total and the other is remaining under 21 when the dealer goes over 21. All of the cards count as face value with the picture cards worth 10 and the aces 1 or 11, you can decide.

So, to work out the total of your hand all you must do is add up the value of the cards together. If your hand exceeds a total of 21, you have bust and are out of the game. The same applies to the dealer. In addition to the rules, when playing Blackjack and applying strategies, it is important to know the difference between a hard hand and a soft hand.

A hard hand is any hand that does not contain an ace, or if It does contain an ace, the value of the card is 1. A soft hand must contain an ace that counts as 11.

Many people choose to play Blackjack over other casino games because there is some skill involved. With that in mind, we will move on to some Blackjack strategies for the basic version of the game, beginning with the Surrender strategy.

Blackjack is a game enjoyed all around the globe. Many people think of the glitz and glamour of Las Vegas when they think of exciting card games, but the reality is that its played online all around the world. One of the surprisingly popular countries where Blackjack is extremely popular is Canada. Having the ability to ability to play online at best casinos for Canadian players makes it very easy for player to get involved in their favourite card game, anywhere, anytime.

Surrender

This may seem like a strange place to begin as it involves, as the name suggests, surrendering your hand. However, it can save you a great deal of money in the long run. The Surrender strategy Is applied having considered your initial two-card hand and the dealer’s upcard. If you believe, based on this information, you have little chance of winning the round you can forfeit your hand and in doing so surrender half the amount of your initial wager.

When to apply this strategy is a personal choice but common scenarios include when your hand totals 16 and the dealer’s upcard is a 9, 10 or Ace. Another common time to implement the Surrender strategy is when you hold 15 and the dealer’s upcard is 10.

Split

When you are dealt two cards of the same value, you have the option to split the pair and play them as separate hands. To do this, you must place an additional wager of the same value as your first wager. You must then play out your first-hand on the right-hand side before moving onto the second hand.

One of the common mistakes many amateur players make when using the Split strategy is to split regardless of the value of the cards. Hands containing Ace-Ace or 8-8 should always be split but for every other pair, you must consider the dealers hand. If the dealer’s upcard is lower than 10 but not a 7, you can feel confident splitting a pair of 9’s and 7’s. For pairs of 3’s and 7’s anything in the dealers hand between 2 and 8 is good for a split and pairs of 2’s and 6’s are good if the dealer’s upcard is between 2 and 7.

Double Down

When you have the option to Double Down, you can receive one additional card for double the amount your initial wager. Doing this removes the right for you to receive any additional cards in this round so you must consider the strategy carefully to see if it is suitable. In most cases, it is worth taking up the option when your hand is worth 10 or 11 and this includes a pair of 5’s.

More specifically, the hands you are most likely to Double Down include hard 8, 9, 10, and 11 plus soft 13 through to 18. By applying this strategy successfully, you are giving yourself a slightly better chance of winning the hand.

Hit and Stand

Basically, you should always Hit (ask for another card) when you have a hand of 8 or less. All hands from 8 up to 11 should either be hit or Doubled Down, depending on the dealer’s card. If you have a hand value of 17 more this should rarely be Hit and it is the right time to Stand (not ask for another card).

Card Counting

As the name suggests, when applying this Blackjack strategy, you must keep track of the cards being dealt by counting them. You must use your memory to keep track of the cards being dealt and by doing so it is possible to build up an idea of the cards remaining in the deck. Knowing this information will allow you to change your Blackjack strategy accordingly.

To help with the process, groups of cards are given values. Cards 2 to 6 are +1, cards 7, 8 and 9 are 0 and face cards and aces are -1. By using this system, it makes it easier to keep track of the cards dealt and you can base your wager based on the running count. When the count is at a high positive number, it is generally a good time to bet high but when it is a low number, it is better to place smaller wagers as the odds are not in your favour. This is commonly known as the Hi-Lo system.

Card Counting takes a great deal of practise but is well worth the effort as it is proven to improve players chances of winning Blackjack. Yes, the dealer has the same chance as you to receive the remaining cards in the deck. However, you should combine Card Counting with the Double Down and Split strategies highlighted above, something the dealer cannot do themselves.

Summary

The beauty of playing Blackjack and using the strategies is that anyone can do it successfully. Card Counting does require patience and practise, but it is worth the effort when you can switch on the computer to play Blackjack knowing you have Card Counting in your arsenal.

As with any casino game, the house has the edge but remember to have fun and try some of the Blackjack strategies explained above.
